Guiding True Political Reform in the State of New York
26 May
In an interview on Albany’s Talk 1300, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said, ”Reduce the size of government. It’s not a line in a speech; it has to be an actuality . . . That’s what you hear from the Golisanos of the world.”
Cuomo continued, “We have to talk about cutting taxes, reducing cost. Not just capping growth. Actually reducing the costs, and it’s possible.”
Cuomo cited Rochester Mayor Bob Duffy who’s reaction to this economic turmoil was to cut his budget by 5 percent.
Cuomo’s saying the right things. Duffy is doing the right things. And it’s a start.
Do you know of any other elected officials who are saying or doing the right things? Let us know on the comments page.

The Cuomo family history of left wing politics and spending are now being reversed? Political grandstanding is not what we need.
I do agree that Bob Duffy is a solid citizen and his intentions are to turn this around. However, he is that lone rescue swimmer in a pool of hungry sharks. We need more honest efforts like his. if we do not help him he too will be eaten by the political sharks around him.
I think our entire country is now guided by a new defintiion of democracy. “Government by the government, for the benefit of the government.”
We can start by changing New York, but only by removing the old guard entirely. This requires taking back control of New York politics from the handful of powerful politicans in the “good old boy” network.
This will be hard to do. Our once great State has had the distinction of allowing a carpet bagger to use one of the Senate seats in Congress to launch an unsuccessful bid for the presidency. We recently hosted a dog and pony show of “responsible government” by ousting our governor for the poor personal choices he made. What we found in his replacement is truly embarassing.
We have allowed this once great State to become a political circus. The jokes on Saturay Night Live are not so funny when you realize this is real and the effects on business owners and the jobs they used to provide are quite real.
Tom Golisano is one more capable person who has thrown in the towel.
To Tom Galisano.
I moved to Florida after working at EK for 32 years for many of the same reasons you sited.
My wife and I loved Rochester. We were members of a number groups and enjoyed Ridgemont CC. A very good friend of mine is Jim Williams who I know you know. I started a consuling frim to “wind down” into retirement and we are doing well with most of our contracts with JNJ.
So, we could have afforded to stay or snowbird. However, I could not stay on principle. Albany, and the unions have killed a great state. It is over. My only worry is that they like California will ask Floridians for a bail out.
There is a simple solution to fair taxation in New York State. I shared this proposal with Laureen Oliver from your office, but never received a reply to present this proposal to Responsible New York. If you truly love New York, won’t you at least offer me the opportunity to present this proposal. It has the backing of at least one State Assemblyman and one State Senator right now. Go to http://www.nyfairtax.org to learn more about this proposal.
Tom Golisano is absolutely correct. This outrage did not happen over night .Thousands and thousands of people moved into this state after WWII when NY welfare became the most generous in the world and created generations of uneducated , unemployed state dependants..we are being taxed out of our shirts….
I am totally disgusted with New York politics. For a metaphor, we have a family where the children (citizens) are dependent upon the parents (politicians) to do the right thing for the HOUSEHOLD (STATE) but they are not. Various kids get various financial favors from a parent and the sum total is that the family has blown its budget.
tom im with you, this state is absolutely ridiculous.im realy glad im retiring this year as there is no work and everything is going up dramatically what i would like to know is where did patterson come from?did he come from outerspace?i never heard of this jerk before.and now he is our governor.i voted for you twice but it didnt work so i hope you do well in fla.tom we all love you and hope you come back and run again jim
A local Buffalo business has also recently decided to leave the area for Florida. We moved to CA 29 years ago when Western Electric closed. We moved back to Buffalo 2 years ago because it was a more economical area to retire to. Unfortunately, things hadn’t improved during the time we were gone. Businesses and people are still leaving; we can’t attract forward thinking politicians and Albany consistently ignores this area except to raise taxes. There is so much potential here that isn’t being tapped into. The people here are the backbone of the area and we need to keep them, not drive them away.
NICE MOVE TOM G.
IF I WERE IN YOUR POSITION, I WOULD CONSIDER GOING EVEN A LITTLE FURTHER, LIKE TO THE KAMAN ISLANDS.
UNFORTIONATELY, THE “FEDERAL” GOVERNMENT HAS THE SAME SICKNESS AND IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE IT IS GOING TO BE CURED ANYTIME SOON.
It seems like there are no current politicians that will call it like the people actually paying the bills do.We see the problems BUT then ’someone’ re-elects the same old garbage to office !.We need someone to STAND THE LINE,and it should be a public figure.Even if it means shooting yourself in the foot - so to speak. Then maybe - I said maybe the rest of the voters in the state that do not have their head far up someones butt - will vote in real caring politicians, maybe ?.
Congratulations!! At long last Tom Golisano’s many efforts to “clean up New York” are beginning to pay off!! Getting rid of thev “3 men in the corner” is going to be a great beginning to the uphill challenge to take back our State!. Contrary to some opinions, Tom’s establishing residence in FL was not “throwing in the towel”, but a brave attempt to WAKE UP THE NY CITIZENRY!!
Congrts mr. G you finally rattled somebodys cage in Albany, Now we need to get rid of these morons who have nested for so long in office. Mr. News confrence himself Chuck Schumer , He may not care about those PORKY projects but we do because its comming out of our pockets, send him and good ole Louie back to private life. And if Maggie doesn t bag her version of the Fast Ferry send her packing too. The working people of Rochester don t need it or want it.
Maybe we DO have a voice! I moved to Rochester suburb two years ago as the area has so much potential. Mr. Golisano, please keep up the good work. There is a sense of needed change in the air!!!
Thank you!!
I certainly understand Mr. Golisano why you decided to make Florida your new residence, however, I am extremely disappointed as I was hoping you would run for governor of NY because this time I know you would win by a landslide!! I think this is the only real way to change Albany because you are not a puppet like the usual Albany crowd.
Thank you Mr Golisano for your perseverance and patience on behalf our citizens. Stepping up as you have does give us hope that this governmental mess can be cleaned up.
Mr. Golisano, bravo to you regarding NY, but shame on you for supporting Obama! What were you thinking?
Mary Beth
Andrew Cuomo is simply an opportunistic, hypocritical politician who has never cared about taxes - except to want more of them. Actions speak louder than words, Andy. What a phony! He’s another pompous blowhard like his father. Spare us from the Cuomos!
I called athe Senator representing the WNY ( Cheektowaga, NY ) area. & told him , I had voted for him . Because of his campagin speaches. must havae been laughing all the time
I’m registered Rep. & had I known he was going to stand for the so called ( session ) that Paterson, & his 3 or 4 Senators did behind closed doors.
Then cried because they took his Chairmanship of a Comm. away. he should have stood up then.
Then Smith giving him some other Comm. Chair. so he could get his Extra money.
Shame on YOU Golisano for also CRYING about your having to pay Taxes. & grabing your money & running to Florida. & for supporting the ones that helped cause the mess in Albany.
Doesn’t surprise me Cuomo is beating the drums as ‘The People’s Lawyer’. Same tune from Spitzer and look where THAT led!
Cuomo claims to want to reduce taxes? Let him use his office as it was MEANT to be used - investigate allegations of FW&A in NYS government and let the chips fall where they may.
He spent thousands of NYS tax dollars investigating colleges over allegations of fraud in the ‘Preferred Lender’ scheme (not yet ‘illegal’ at the time) yet refused to investigate SUNY in a case of genuine felony fraud - claiming a ‘conflict of interest’.
Odd then how in his testimony before Congress he ADMITTED (under oath) he ALREADY HAD ‘investigated’ SUNY (see above and 9min into his video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NejE6c-5n_U ).
I get the distinct feeling his staff insulate him from all this - choosing who and which issues they allow him to meet/hear of so they can ride his coattails into the governor’s mansion. Either THAT or he’s a bigger liar then Bernie Maddof - and THAT’S coming from someone who introduced his Daddy to the ‘EZ-Pass’ technology!
