The Phantom of the Opera is another musical that has dominated the Broadway scene for decades. Since its opening in 1988, this production has been the main show in the Majestic Theatre. Based on the total number of performances, Chicago, Cats, Les Miserables and Mamma Mia! are among the top shows in Broadway’s history. In recent years, Hamilton and the School of Rock have gained major momentum in the Theater District.

Overall, dozens of plays in this world-famous district have received nominations and claimed awards from the Drama Desk Awards, Tony Awards and Grammy Awards.

Transportation and Directions

Broadway Theaters are spread out in the Theater District which consists of more than a dozen blocks. The New York City Subway offers convenient access to this premier entertainment hub in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Most of the venues are within walking distance from the 42nd Street-Times Square station, which has platforms for more than 10 lines. This underground rail complex is essentially connected to all major districts in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Additional subway service is available at 50th, 53rd, and 57th streets.

Depending on the theatre, taxis and other hired vehicles can drop you off near the main entrance. Carrying southbound traffic, Broadway and 7th Avenue run past most of the Broadway Theaters. However, the configurations of these busy thoroughfares might create challenges for vehicles seeking direct routes to the theatres. Skyscrapers and high-rise hotels dominate the Theater District, so you’ll need to carefully use some major points of reference to find your destination.
